My son was dx with Fine Motor Apraxia There is little about this, could there be more to this dx?

Ryan is 6 years old and I have been trying for 4 years to see what I see and they say Fine Motor Apraxia but the more I read it seems like it is Dyspraxia can there be more to the dx than what the Neuro says?

I'm still fighting with my son's school to have him tested and they have refused now for well over a year and now I am looking for a Child advocate any advice on that too?

Hi there

It can sometimes be very hard to pinpoint exactly what to label a child's challenges.  What have you read about these conditions.  Apraxia is the same term sometimes used for dyspraxia.

Here is information about fine motor apraxia.  Here is one definition of what may be going on with your son:

"Total or partial loss of the ability to perform coordinated movements or manipulate objects in the absence of motor or sensory impairment."

I am assuming he has difficulty with handwriting...using scissors...things of this nature?

Now here is all about developmental dyspraxia which involves trouble with speech, fine motor, and gross motor movements...these kids typically had trouble sitting, crawling, and walking as a baby and also with speech.

Here is a definition for developmental dyspraxia:

"The Dyspraxia Foundation defines developmental dyspraxia as "an impairment or immaturity of the organisation of movement. It is an immaturity in the way that the brain processes information, which results in messages not being properly or fully transmitted. The term dyspraxia comes from the word praxis, which means 'doing, acting'. Dyspraxia affects the planning of what to do and how to do it. It is associated with problems of perception, language and thought."

My son who has autism has had trouble with speech and also planning out sequences of movement...he had tons of trouble buttoning, zippering, blowing bubbles, sucking through a straw...all these things where you have to plan out a sequence of movement.

What symptoms does your son have?

I have had the experience of getting an advocate and I wrote an article for the ADHD site about this very thing.  You can find my article here.

I know it is really hard...you may have to go to different specialists to find out exactly what is going on with your child.  Hang in there and let me know if you need any further information or support.
