speech problems related to Prader-Willi Syndrome

My Grandson is 10 years old and was diagnosed at 2 weeks old as having Prader-Willi Syndrome. Despite having speech and language therapy input over the years ,he still has speech problems. He does not speak in sentences, missing out syllables or complete words. He also gets the order of words mixed up. He writes this way too. His speech is also non-fluent and slow, as though he has to think of each word before he can verbalise it. What I would like to know is,is this a result of the Prader-Willi Syndrome, or a separate problem, and is there anything we can do to help him?

Thank-you

Hello Grana

The answer to your question is yes...speech problems can definitely be a symptom of Prader-Willi syndrome.  In one research study they say this:  "Underlying cerebral dysfunction, combined with a characteristic anatomy of the mouth and larynx in PWS, contributes to altered voice, speech and language function."

Here is more information about speech and language problems associated wth Prader-Willi Syndrome and what you might be able to do about them.

I think one of the best things you can do is to get some specific advice and support.  You can find this type of support from the Prader-Willi Syndrome Association.  Here is their number and email address:  please call (800) 926-4797 or email national@pwsausa.org.  Also here is their web site.

I hope this helps some.  Let us know if you need any other resources...I would be glad to help.

Thank you for your question.
