Do you have any suggestion for controlling pacing

I have a teenaged son who has tics.  He paces--I have been told this is a tic as well.  Any suggestions on how to control the pacing?

Thank you for your question and welcome to FriendsOfQuinn.com.

I am not a medical professional and am not able to give you medical advice.

However, based on previous reading and research on Tourette Syndrome, I can provide you with some general information.

Tourette Syndrome can include pacing. Usually, symptoms, such as pacing or other tics, do not interfere with daily functioning or require medication. There are, however, some medications to help should tics interfere with functioning. The most common type of medications used are neuroleptics. There is not one specific medication that works well for all people, so if your son does need medication, it may be a matter of trial and error to find the medication that works best for him. These types of medications do have side effects including sleepiness, cognitive dulling and weight gain. Side effects can sometimes be managed by starting on a low dose and slowly increasing the dosage as needed or decreasing the dose as side effects emerge.

Some people find psychotherapy to be helpful. This isn't because Tourette Syndrome is caused by an emotional disorder but because therapy can sometimes help the person learn to cope with living with the symptoms of Tourette Syndrome. In addition, Tourette is often comorbid with other conditions, such as ADHD, and therapy can help in finding strategies to cope with those symptoms as well.

I hope this information helps
