I want to know what complications if any could come with a pharyngeal flap sugery?
My granddaughter is 5 years old now and was diagosed w/ Digeorge Syndrome @3 months. At first they thought is was vcfs but changed it to DiGeorge. She is starting Kindergarten this year and the Dr.s want to do this to help with her speech. I am worried about complications because she has already been thru so much....She is doing so great now i wonder if the good out weighs the risk. She has submucosal deformation of the palette
The Drs will tell you the same old worries, bleeding, having issues with the anthesesia and that sort. I am not a Dr. just a mom of my daughter who has had this surgery twice. Once when she was about 5 and then again at age 7-8.
This was an incredbiliy useful surgery for Emma. This allowed her to talk and have others understand her. She will still require lots and lots of therapy after it but it made a huge difference to us. Some of the nasality went away. In other ways, she was able to pronounce the proper word. It was incredibly exciting for all of us. She recovered in just a few days.
We have to have a revision because the first time they did the surgery, they didn't take her tonsils too so when we had those removed, it allowed way to much air back through her nose. AFter the revision it has been much better. ;;/////////////everything has risks but there are huge benifits too!
