social problems as a result of cardio velo syndrome
My beautiful daughter has a friend with cardio velo syndrome. They are both 18 now, but have been friends since the age of 5. The friend has become more and more socially isolated because of her many difficulties. She is dependent, and engages in socially inappropriate and arkward behavior. What is the best way for my daughter to show compassionate and help her friend? How can she help the friend cultivate more independence and socially acceptable behavior in a caring way?
Thanks for your question and welcome to FriendsOfQuinn.com.
How wonderful for both your daughter and her friend. It is rare that we find a friendship that lasts throughout our lives and your daughter seems to have found such a friend. You should also be so proud of your daughter for wanting to help her friend through the tough time.
Sometimes, the best way to help is to continue to set an example. If your daughter includes her friend in activities and shows her own independence, her friend may believe she can do it too. Being included can also help your daughter's friend to feel better about herself, letting her know someone cares and is interested.
I think one of the hardest things is when these types of gestures don't show immediate changes. We all want so much to be able to make a difference and for that difference to be readily apparent. Talk to your daughter about the importance of continuing her efforts, even if she doesn't see that it is making any difference. It probably is, because having a true friend always makes a positive difference in our lives.
