Support Groups

I started the Nebraska VCFS support group (Mission 22q) back in 1998, and I've had many people tell me what a wonderful thing I've done. Problem is, I did it for selfish reasons. I wanted a support group and there was not one in Nebraska. Yes, it's been a lot of work, but it's been rewarding. I've met and worked with the most amazing people through the years. I've leaned on them when I needed to and I try to...

Graduation

My son, Jeff, who has VCFS will graduate from High School in just a few days. When he started school at 3, I never thought that this day would come. He's an amazing kid who has overcome a lot of things to be where he is today. Having Jeff as a son has made me a better mom and person. I am honored to be his mother!

CAREGIVERS: LISTEN TO OTHERS/LET THEM SUPPORT YOU SOMETIMES

The past year has been the one of the toughest in my life. First, I watched my best friend die of cancer over 12 months. She passed away on December 3, 2010.

During this time, Jeff (who has VCFS with DiGeorge Sequence), turned 18 and we began putting things in place for him as an adult. We applied for Developmental Disability Services and he was denied. We had to appeal that decision and spent two months focusing...

I'm Proud of My Son

Picture of my son, Jeff (who has VCFS), working at a local grocery store. He loves it and hopes to continue working there during the 18-21 program through our school starting next year.

A year ago I never would have dreamed he could do it, but he still continues to amaze us everyday! We're so proud of him!

A Blessing in Disguise

My 18-year-old son, Jeff, has VCFS. Today in Biology class they were studying Chromosome mutation and out of the blue, Jeff spoke up and told about having a deletion in the 22nd Chromosome. You could have blown me away when I heard about it.
I guess it pays off to talk about VCFS as something positive, because that's how Jeff feels about. If we were always negative when talking about the syndrome, I don't think he...

Don't Forget to Let Educators Know You Appreciate Them

It seems like you hear so much about the bad experiences people have with special education, that you forget that there are very dedicated people out there who go out of their way to make sure your child with special needs has a great educational experience. Jeff's teacher, Mr. Knobel, is one of those great teachers, so I nominated him for A+ Teacher of the Week.

Don't forget to make sure that you tell all the...

Make Sure To Look For Your Child's Strengths

I was reminded by a good friend the other day, that even though our children with VCFS have a lot of difficulties, we cannot forget their strengths.

My son Jeff has some many strengths!

1. Everyone who meets Jeff, loves Jeff.

2. He can spell better than me!

3. He can tell you everything you want to know about World War II

4. He has a fantastic sense of...
