Never Give Up

My son, Jeff, who has VCFS has extreme anxiety. In fact, he spent most of the last 6 years on homebound services through the school. There was no way to get him in the building, and if we did get him there, he melted down. I thought that he would never go to school and was ready to give up trying.
Well, this past summer, Jeff went to summer school. He wasn't happy about it at first. He said I was ruining his summer. Well, he went and he loved it. He thrived at school the whole summer. It made me so happy to see him get on the bus and come home happy from school every day.
I was worried that returning to school this fall would be hard on him, because there would be a lot more people in the halls and classes. We planned to have him go to school for just half days to get him acclimated to the new environment. He said that he wanted to go the whole day, not a half day. He didn't want to miss anything.
He's been in school a week now and everything is going great. He's so happy and can't wait to tell me about his day. This is his senior year and I'm so glad he will get to be there and enjoy all that his senior year has to offer.
If someone would have told me a year ago that Jeff would go to school all day, by his choice, I wouldn't have believed them. He's worked so hard to get his anxiety under control and we are SO proud of him!
I guess the morale of the story is - never give up! Thank goodness Jeff never gave up! He continues to surprise us with his abilities every day!
