Thank you for your post and welcome to FriendsOfQuinn.com.

I am so sorry your son is having such a difficult time in school. I am sure he is a wonderful child and know how frustrating this must be for you and for him.

You said your son wears glasses for far-sighted and lazy eye and I wonder if anyone has tested him for convergence insufficiency. My son was diagnosed with this last year. He had some of the problems you have described, such as messy handwriting, not being able to copy notes from the board, problems reading. Convergence insufficiency is when your eyes can't focus on an object together and you can end up seeing double or feel as if the words or objects are swimming around because both eyes are seeing it separately. I had had my son tested for eyeglasses several times and this was not picked up. Finally, an opthomologist diagnosed it and we went for several months of eye exercises. My son no longer complains about headaches or taking notes and his reading scores improved immensely. I don't know if this may be the case for your son but I was glad when someone mentioned this to me so I could help my son. It may be worth checking into.

You also say you are always at odds with the school. You are able to hire an educational advocate to help you in working with the schools. This can sometimes be expensive but may help you in getting the right services for your son.

    You can read more:

I spent many years working with school districts to help my older son (emotional issues) and know first hand how exhausting and frustrating it can be.

Your son's IEP should contain goals. If your son is not making adequate progress and not meeting goals, you have the right to request another meeting to request additional services or accommodations to help him.

I hope some of this information helps. Please check back and let me know how you are doing.
