What's that Word?: Factitious

The word of the day is "Factitious". It is something that is “produced by humans rather than by natural forces. The other definition is “formed by or adapted to an artificial or conventional standard.”

So a flying saucer is not a factitious object, but the government is very factitious because it was created by humans.

What's the Word?: Headlong

Last night I went out to dinner with my wife, Pari, a couple of her friends, my niece and my nephew. I forget exactly how we got on the subject of words, but Pari said that one of the reasons that she loves my nephew is because he always uses a word that she doesn’t know. My nephew goes to Harvard University. Pari had asked him to teach her a new word and he did and explained it to her. In a way, it made me feel a little...

Asking for Help

I have always seemed to have a problem with asking for help as far back as high school. My mother bought me an ancient Chinese philosophy for me to keep on my desk. She wanted me to remember it, which I did and it says, “He who asks is a fool for five minutes, he who does not ask is a fool for life.” I think that I was embarrassed and still get embarrassed or ashamed to ask for help because I feel that most people could do...

Thanksgiving with an LD

Thanksgiving is a time of
celebration, joy and family; that’s how it is for all of us. However, sometimes
kids with learning differences can feel left out for a number of reasons. The
main reason is mostly that parents won’t ask their kids to do anything because
the parents are worried that their kids will just mess up and get everything
wrong when they want everything to be perfect. The solution to this is actually
very simple...

Getting up in the Morning

I think everybody has a very hard time getting up in the morning whether or not you have an LD. I was just talking about “having a hard time waking up” with Pari, my wife this morning: about how if you sleep too long you are actually more tired than if you don’t oversleep. I remember in college that one of my roommates at Gow always stayed up until about 1:00 in the morning and then always had trouble waking up.&nbsp...

Speaking at Uconn about Bullying

Last Thursday
I went to the University of Connecticut (UConn) to talk about bullying with Dr.
Alan Kazdin, a professor at Yale.
The subject was the Science and Life of Bullying. Dr. Kazdin talked about the science and I
talked about the life.

I spoke after Dr. Kazdin gave his
presentation. They requested that I read
sections from my book, which Dr. Nan Taylor (the organizer of the event)
thought would best tell my...

At the End, the Bully Always Falls!

It really does
seem like the world is ending; perhaps the Mayans were right about the world
ending in 2012. Everybody is angry at each other and nobody can seem to make any
sense out of what anybody is saying; people are just plane confused. My point
here is that this is very much like what it is like to have an LD. One person
tries help the other but the other just doesn’t comprehend, and when one person
is trying to understand...

Social Issues

I don’t know
if this is an LD thing or VCFS thing or what, but whenever I am at a table with
friends I never seem to know when to talk, because whenever I do I also seem to
get interrupted or I think they are don talking and they aren’t. This is
something that I have been struggling with my whole life and I am now 29 years
old. I remember I use to get so upset by it I would excuse myself and leave the
table, and sometimes I would...
