Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 01:20 PMI have always told my son,Tony, that he "learns differently". He has alot of struggles with typical "classroom" style learning, but I home schooled him for 2 years and he thrived. I adjusted the curriculum to suit his learning style. He took many breaks to play basketball or something then he could concentrate better. He learned the same things he was learning in public school but did much better learning his way. For example, We were learning about pond life and instead of giving him a book about it we actually went out to a pond and took samples and pictures. If he was learning about WWII we would look at maps and pictures and watch documentaries about it. We used hands on math manipulatives ect...He really did well. Now he is in a school with all LD kids and does well there too. Homeschooling is a great option for kids who "learn differently" as long as they are engaged in outside activities also like sports teams, music or art classes,ect...Tony took music lessons, art classes, and he did sports camps.

I like it but it's such a broad term learning disabled I'm afriad when you say to people that, it might bring the term r word up even more only because when you say something like I have learning differences they'll ask for you to explain and then I'd be afraid the person your explaining it too might answer in that form saying oh your just saying that your the r word, I think it is a good Idea to try and find something different an easy way of saying that you learn differently from other people just not sure what.
