School Study Tips

Ok guys here is one of the most difficult questions to consider when helping a child with learning disabilities study for a test. What study methods do I use. Tonight we studied for a social studies exam over world explorers. The saying if you don't use it you lose it is true, because I could not remember any of them except Christopher Columbus. Cam had to know twenty explorers and what they accomplished.
This is our problem. He has a hard time with reading. Is there any methods or practices you know of that may make learning to read easier. We are at the point now that we don't concentrate on phonics, just site words. Another challenge is while we are studying at home he seems to get it. Of course I read to him and he verbally answers. When he gets to school and takes the test, he can't remember anything.
I need to know if any of you have any ideas of improving memory skills for children with VCFS. I research and research online for ideas, but their really is limited information about VCFS, which is why I was so excited to find this wonderful website.
Anyway for those that might read this if you have any ideas that might help us it will be appreciated.
