Look Beyond the Label to Discover Gifts

Hi there and thank you so much for joining friendsofquinn.com; you might be honored to be here, but we are more honored to have yu here. You sound like a person who knows right from wrong and what you have said about lables is something that I talk a lot about on the site. I have also mentioned on TV that I am trying to changed the the term learning disabled to "learning differences." What a wonderful illustration of going outside the box. Even after being told by a professional? what you were suppose to do with your son. You toke it upon yourself to find your sons true nature of what he could really do. Often times as parents we accept what is told to us and take it as whole truths (or what I like to call face value). When in fact often times they are only partial truths and we need to take the time to find out what is the total truth (whole value) and what is not. I commend you in taking efforts into your own hands and finding out for yourself what your son can really do. Often times we dont give our children the benefit of the doubt when we are told they are unable to do something. If more parents looked outside of the box or worked outside the box, we would be amazed at what we would find in our children.

I think there is an unbelievably complex human in each of us, with abilities and a nature of our own. Our responsibility as a group, for our own benefit, is to provide the tools necessary to contribute, each in our own way. Not dismiss one another at any point, birth through old age, through labeling.

I can be judged on my effort; the only need is to find what it is I can do.

I just think a label, draws a conclusion and is often dismissive of further exploration. Gifts do dwell in everyone.

At a very early age, I was taught that there where people out there that are different then I was,I was taught that even though they are different they are still people and they needed to be treated as people. I am currently a special eduaction para professional and work with one young man each day and I am a mother of three children. My oldest was just recently diagnosised with ADD and my two youngest children have VCFS. I am okay with their labels because is means that they will recieve services through the school if it is needed. My oldest is a wonderful child, she is smart and creative, she has completely tested out of speech and special education, so there is no IEP, however there will be a deal written up that if she needs more time with testing and other things, she will be able to have that extra time. The school has been wonderful for her and I pray that it continues to be this way for her. My oldest son, has an IEP and will continue to recieve services for some time, and my youngest well we still have at least another year before the school takes over his services.  I couldn't agree more about we are more then just labels, with my experience with those that have special needs they are some of the most wonderful individuals around and we just have to give them the chance to shine and we need to remember that they have bad days too. I have a story, I used to be a camp counslar, when I was younger, at a camp for those with special needs, I remember getting the folder on the young woman that I would be responsiable for and reading all these horriable things about her and thinking we will see if she is really this way. When she got to camp her bangs where to long and I asked if I could trim them, when I got permission to do this it made a world of difference, I told that I was going to trim her bangs so that I could see her pretty eyes. We had a great week, she always sang to me. You are my Sunshine, to this day when I hear that song I think of her and the joy she brought into my life that one week in the summer years ago. We are more then just labels we are individuals, we all have dreams, small and big, no matter who we are, the young man that I work with dreams of being a police officer, even though it won't happen here on Earth, maybe in Heaven with the Good Lord he will realize his dreams.

I have a LD and it does NOT define who i am as a person if anything it has developed me as a person who is determined and won't let her LD get in her way. Morly It has made me a stronger indivisual.

I would bw a competly different person without my LD

I suppose we must have our labels, for they do help us to group things and get us into the right ballpark.. But it is so important that we do not let a label do our thinking and understanding for us, as if that could work. Labels are only that. My grandmother would label her jams and jellies... blackberry, strawberry, peach, apple...but no label could ever describe how wonderful and different each tasted. That required a bit more effort.

So it is with people and the teaching and the learning from people. From a label, we learn only a category of differences, and someone else's idea of the categories at that. A bit more effort is required to find the differences of each one of us, and how best to learn from those differences and how best to teach with them.

            Thanks for the great article. I know what Quinn is going through and there is alot that I can relate of being diagnosed with LD. I wasn't diagnosed with VCFS until I was 18 and this was before Quinn's time and before doctors had a clue what 22Q11 deletion was. They would only guess of Digeorge syndrome because that was founded at that time or Autism. From Quinn's insperation to spread out more about VCFS, It made me compelling enough to write my true story living with VCFS as well. Why don't you check it out? I could not agree more. Children are just that, children. They all look different and act different. No one needs to be labeled. This is a way of segragating people and only leads to misunderstanding and isolation for the child. Everyone needs to be treated as an individual. Thank you for the wonderful insight!
