The Caregiver's Corner: "Taking a Break"

Acceptance also means that I understand my limitations as a parent and as a human being. My son doesn't want an automaton. He wants a mom who is happy and has the energy to give him the time that he needs. In order to achieve this, it is vital for me to take time for myself to rejuvenate and reenergize. As much as you love your child, you cannot sacrifice your health or well being. If you are too tired to function, who will help your child? I wish to not only talk the talk but walk the walk. I am telling you that it is good to take a break if you need it. As a caregiver it is important to ask for help if you need it. Get a babysitter. Get some respite. In order to have more time for your family it may also be necessary to cut back on your work load. I am about to set the example here.
As much as I love writing for Friends of Quinn, I am going to take a break. I love writing about my experiences as a parent and a teacher. But right now I feel the need to spend more time with my son and my family. I know that I will return to writing about learning disabilities in some capacity. But right now my heart tells me that I need to spend less time writing and more time doing. I want and need to be with my children for more hours of the day. As much as we are told that we can do it all, I am here to tell you that this is not true. You have to set some boundaries and strive for balance. What is most important in your life? Set your priorities and live the life you wish to live.
If you enjoy my writing you may still find me on Health Central. I am the community leader and a writer for My Depression Connection, Sexual Health Connection, Skin Cancer Connection, and My Skin Care Connection You may also find me writing on ADHD Central and Anxiety Connection. Please feel free to find me at any of these Health Central sites.
It has been such an honor and a pleasure to have the opportunity to write on Quinn's site. I have a heavy heart about taking a break from writing here but I think that this is a good decision for me at this time. I do hope to return when I have achieved some balance. Thank you all so much for your comments and participation in our discussions here.
Remember that no matter what you are going through, you are not alone. Reach out, connect with others, and share your experience. You just may help someone else who is on a similar journey.
